The Camino Natural del Pòrt de Vielha, revives a natural path that was once used as a transport route to connect the regions of the Val d’Aran and La Ribagorça. The walk of around 12 km begins at the southern end of the Vielha tunnel and follows the marks of the GR-211-5. The spectacular natural beauty of the surroundings is set against the traces of history, as evidenced by the remains of defensive bunkers that can still be seen along the way.
Interesting facts:
During the Romería de Santa Quiteria, held on 22 May, a procession of walkers from the Val d’Aran crosses the Pòrt de Vielha, in a popular pilgrimage to celebrate the opening of the pass after the spring thaw has cleared the snows.
